Summary: I executed and led UX/HF activities in redesigning a flagship neurosurgical navigation platform for minimally invasive spine, ENT, and brain surgeries, successfully meeting the business and design goals and launching the product with FDA approval.

Project: Major redesign of the flagship neurosurgical navigation product Medtronic StealthStation S8 Neurosurgery System. One major aspect of the redesign was moving from a mouse-based input to a touch-screen input.

My Role: Working both alone and alongside a team of fellow senior UX/HF professionals, I was assigned to execute and lead UX/HF activities within this major product redesign. This included leading certain aspects of the project and supporting teammates in other aspects. My tasks spanned user research and design, as well as championing UCD to key stakeholders, common tools, and improving Medical Device manufacturing quality processes to incorporate UCD. I also contributed to the industrial design of the new S8 hardware.

Specific tasks I performed included but were not limited, to heuristic evaluation, qualitative research, clinical observation, interviews, coordinating UX/Marketing feedback, implementing UCD within a medical device manufacturing environment, developing clinician personas, formative concept design, feedback and testing, service mapping, task & workflow diagramming, wireframing, information architecture, card sorting, touch interface and navigation, interaction design, creating a design system, UI Specification, UI visual design, UI style guide, service design/blueprinting, improved task breakdown/use error analysis and reporting, [more]

I led UX for the redesign of the most patient safety critical workflow, Patient Registration. And, the design of a new mobile product offering allowing neurosurgeons to perform surgical planning on iPad/iOS mobile devices while away from the OR.

Result: The successful FDA approval, delivery, and launch of the redesigned Medtronic StealthStation™ S8 Neurosurgery System that enables neurosurgeons to precisely track the location of surgical instruments throughout a procedure. The StealthStation S8 system introduced the most advanced version of Stealth technology — a combination of hardware, software, tracking algorithms, image data merging, and specialized instruments to help guide you during surgical procedures.

Segmentation Workflow – Creating a surgical plan

This workflow is creating a plan for the surgeon to ablate or remove a tumor. These screens demonstrate the culmination of all the foundational UX work with high-fidelity visual design.

Registration Workflow – Registering the patient to the system

This workflow is the process by which the patient is registered to the system and 3D images. These screens demonstrate the culmination of all the foundational UX work with high-fidelity visual design.
